Self Portrait Guided Practice

1.  Explore and Practice Basics
  • Explore basic proportions of the face to be more successful with your portrait to look more natural.
  • Then use those proportions to draw the two works by Anguissola and Crosby in your sketchbook.
    • Answer the questions on your own
      • What kinds of stories do you imagine from these works?
      • How did you get that story?
      • Label some of the clues in your drawings of each portrait.
2. Prepare and Practice for your main project. Complete the following tasks
  • Write or sketch some ideas in your sketchbook.
    • Brainstorm what kinds of stories would you like to tell in YOUR self-portrait?
    • How could you show that? What details would you need to include to make it easy for others to understand
  • Practice Drawing Yourself a few times (5-10 minutes each time) by looking into a mirror.
    • Focus on proportions- where are your eyes compared to the top of your head? mouth? ears?
    • Try making different facial expressions.
    • How can you use your pose, environment, and facial expressions to tell us more about YOU through your self-portrait?
3. Create a final (best) Self Portrait and fill the page.
  • Pick your best practice drawing and make it bigger!
  • Spend at least 1 hour on it, more is better- it shows you are really looking at details and taking the time to capture details.
  • Draw from your reflection using a pencil. Be sure to capture the details that make you look like YOU!
  •  Add shading with your pencil.
  • If you don’t like your first effort, try again. Label your best (finished) Self Portrait and include it in the
    portfolio.
  • Add texture and color is a bonus- and add if you spent at least 1 hour just making the design. That's what we're really evaluating.
4. Add images of everything to the your template.
  • Images of steps 1-2 and any "mess-ups" from step 3 should go in Green area.
  • In Blue area you only need one image of final project from step 3.
