Course Descriptions
All courses are studio based. We will learn and demonstrate the expectations for working in and maintaining a safe, respectful artmaking space. All classes will participate with critiques to better apply, understand, communicate our design choices we make throughout the art making process. All students are expected to fully participate participate respectfully.
Ceramics
Beginning Ceramics:
Prerequisites: open mind and a willingness to try something new
Developing a strong foundational understanding of fundamental ceramic techniques and how they relate to the Elements of Art and the design process. Main expectation for work is focused on individual improvement- effort will go a long way. Students will maintain and artistic journal and a ceramic portfolio.
Main Skill focus: Hand building only; Intro: a little of everything

Continue to develop understanding by taking ideas from previous courses to the next level as well as delving more deeply into Creative Process. We will also incorporate a more concrete understanding of Art History and how artists’ from our past affect our understanding of aesthetics and creation of art today. Expectations in general are higher; Effort will still be important, however the other key’s need to make marked improvements as well. Students are expected to create and maintain a portfolio of their work and design development process throughout the class.

Honors Advanced Ceramics
Prerequisites: demonstrate proficiency in HPC(B– or higher)
Taking concepts from HPVA to next level of understanding with the intent of preparing students for the rigor of moving on to higher education after high school. Expectations, again, are higher and will be working more self-directed and independently; Effort will still be important, however the other key’s need to make marked improvements as well. Students are expected to create and maintain a portfolio of their work and design development process throughout the class.
Main Skill focus: Hand building, Potter’s wheel-increasing size and making sets. **
Prerequisites: demonstrate proficiency in HPC(B– or higher)
Taking concepts from HPVA to next level of understanding with the intent of preparing students for the rigor of moving on to higher education after high school. Expectations, again, are higher and will be working more self-directed and independently; Effort will still be important, however the other key’s need to make marked improvements as well. Students are expected to create and maintain a portfolio of their work and design development process throughout the class.

Sculpture
Intermediate Sculpture:
Prerequisites: Visual Arts Major and proficiency in Ceramics Beginning or demonstration of mastery in auditions portfolio.
Continue to develop foundational Design Thinking, Elements of Art, and Principles of Design skills and how they relate to 3-D medial; but by bringing them up to the next level with more emphasis on the Principles of Design. Expectations for overall quality of work are higher; however evidence of effort will still go a long way. Students are expected to create and maintain a portfolio of their work and design development process throughout the class.

AP 3D Design
Prerequisites: 11th-12th grader, proficiency in HPS, HPC, or HPMF (B– or higher)

A formal portfolio with artist statements, artist descriptions, documentation need to demonstrate and in-depth exploration of a theme or idea represented in a body of work by the beginning of May- Check with Ms. Schmit for Official submission day.
