Photographing Artwork Like a Pro

So, just like with everything in life: a photo is not always just a photo. Understanding the purpose and intent behind why you are taking a photo will change how you set-up and take a photo.

Why is an important skill to know? Images of artwork can make or break your career as an artists. It can make bad work look awesome or awesome work look bad. Photos are usually the gatekeepers of scholarships, AP portfolio scores, acceptance to art school, entrance to juried art shows/competitions. If you're in my art class, then it affects what/how I see your work to be able to give you feedback and advice for improving your work.
 Unbreakable Artwork Photography Rules
#1.  Unless photography is the medium, this is not a time to get creative.
#2. Make sure what you want to stand out is in focus (not blurry)
#3. Pay attention to lighting
  • 2D work: bright , even, no shadows
  • Process and 3-D work: bright, even lighting, some but minimal shadows
Bad Artwork Photo
(however, it's a good photo for documenting process)
  • Other stuff in image distracts from project but adds more context to your process and documents your work space.

Good Artwork Photo
(however, it's a bad photo for documenting process)
  • Only see the artwork so it's easier to focus (figuratively+literally) on the artwork to get a better idea of what it will look like in-person.
